LYAPUNOV THEORY

Mod-13 Lec-31 Lyapunov Theory -- I

The Engineering of Football by Jose Mourinho

MADRID -- So let's start with the basics: Not for precisely four and a half years, in this same stadium, against this club, has Barcelona had its pants taken down and received a spanking of this magnitude.

Between May 2008 and now, Barcelona has found it eminently comfortable to visit the Bernabeu, usually leaving with points, scalps and a scoreline of remarkable proportions. On Wednesday night in Madrid, Barca were given a total chasing, made to spin like tops and feel as if their hosts were not only going to end that run of results but add humiliation with relish.

Taking Jose Mourinho at his word, which hasn't always been easy during his exciting and controversial time in La Liga, this match wasn't about the trophy or the victory, but about his squad showing that they not only had the guts but also the mentality to stop feeling second-best to Barcelona in front of their own, passionate supporters. That debate was won. It's pretty clear that Mourinho is always going to have issues with Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos. The proud, haughty, trophy laden Spaniards don't like his manner, don't like him criticizing them in public and yearn to play a little bit more football while, hopefully, adding trophies to the two they have lifted under his command.

What will remain for the cooler heads is the fact that Madrid, at high pace, was utterly in command, played at a tornado speed that ripped right through the fault lines which Barcelona has been exhibiting since the beginning of Pep Guardiola's last season -- it felt like Real should have scored six or seven, particularly as Barca were at sixes and sevens. So what lingers as an interesting fact is that from the point at which Barcelona started to put its foot on the ball with 10 men left on the pitch, Adriano red-carded correctly for a last-man challenge on Gonzalo Higuain, they were the superior side.

That won't matter to those players who lifted the Supercopa, who erased the ugly scars of the defeat at Getafe this past Sunday. But it will matter when the dust settles and people try to evaluate where this leaves Spain's, let's say Europe's, best two teams. No debate that the right fingerprints are on the trophy, none whatsoever. Football is predicated on the fact that if you score twice, concede one and then somehow keep your opponent at bay, then you deserve to win.

The prospect of an understrength Barcelona -- no David Villa, no Carles Puyol and no Dani Alves, who broke down with a muscle strain in the warm up -- winning a trophy and hoisting it at Merengue HQ must have been the stuff of absolute nightmares. So massive kudos to Madrid for playing with urgency, confidence, cutting edge and aggression -- for about 35 minutes.
Does this give weight to the kind of arguments you might find Xabi Alonso, Casillas, Ramos and others with a like mind making in private -- that Madrid just need to add a smidgen of football to its superb counter-attacking, athletic defending and hunger to add more trophies?

We shall see.

To the goals. I don't care what anyone says, not even those who highly value the tremendous cameo which Alex Song gave when he made his debut for Barcelona. The former Arsenal midfielder did some lovely things -- winning the ball, passing with intelligence, showing urgency. Hats off to him. But the way that Madrid clinically stripped bare Barcelona's deficiencies at the back in that torrid first 35 minutes simply underlined that the Catalan club has badly misjudged its need to sign a center back.

Javier Mascherano is an imperial footballer. He can often play without flaw in his improvised center-back position. But in top, top matches, he continues to be exposed. His fans will point out that after Real Madrid was 2-0 up, he made some superb blocks and dug out another heat-seeking pass forward to Pedro, which nearly ended in a goal. In fact, if you subtract his horrible error from Pepe's long punt forward, which allowed Higuain to score the opener, Mascherano had a good game. But what I drew from the match was that Mourinho completely undressed Mascherano, in a football sense.

One of the Portuguese most dramatic and important victories over Barca came in 2010 in the Champions League semifinal first leg, when his Inter team won 3-1. Weeks later, he was at Madrid and he took time to explain the football thinking which had won that tie. He pointed out that he was happy to play the ball long, early and high. That he judged Pique and Puyol to be at their most uncomfortable when they were forced to turn and to go back seeking the ball.

If his strikers and auxiliary pressing players could compete for the second ball and press the turning defenders into errors, Mourinho reckoned that the double effect would be putting Victor Valdes goalmouth in jeopardy and prevent the Barca creative machine from firing properly up front.

It worked.

The early stages were similar. Time and again Barca's improvised back line was forced to see the ball sailing over its head, to turn and to try to control under pressure in a bad area of the pitch.
For at least half an hour Barca was neither sharp enough, quick-footed enough, nor coordinated enough to manage. It was like going to a hi-energy disco aged 40, managing to rave along to the first tune or two before collapsing in a sweating heap.

Song is a talented footballer and athlete, but his new club needed something additional to his skills. I swear there was nearly a white flag from the Blaugrana troops. Then when Cristiano Ronaldo's utterly brilliant improvised flick took him clear of the defense, again, it has to be said that Valdes didn't help his reputation in the face of his doubters when the firm shot seemed to go through his attempt at a block. Yet Valdes, like Casillas, went on to make three outstanding one-on-one blocks. He's not in form, he has contributed to Real Madrid being Supercopa champions, but he remains the right keeper for that club and now simply needs to face the challenge of finding his sharpness, confidence and normally assertive touch.

To watch Alonso, Angel Di Maria and Mesut Ozil send Ronaldo or Higuain through time and again must have been thrilling for the 85,000 Madridistas in the stadium. Had this contest happened at Madison Square Garden as a boxing match, there were stages in which it would have been declared a TKO. But the beauty of the sport was evident as Lionel Messi produced the single-best free kick of his career to make it 2-1, and from that point onward the game was both fascinating, relentless and could have ended with either team winning the trophy.

Overall Madrid not only deserved to be Supercopa champions, it was also a big journey from the hurt of Sunday night to the determination, sharpness and confidence of Wednesday's performance. If Mourinho, who gave Luka Modric his debut, was serious about having real doubts over his players' mentality after the loss to Getafe, they answered him.
Whether they showed that they have added something extra to last season, whether they demonstrated that they did this for their coach, rather than for themselves, is a moot point.
Moreover, on a purely analytical basis, the fact that a 10-man Barcelona, which was two goals down, began to match and sometimes outplay Real is something for Mourinho to assimilate, plan for and eliminate. If he does that successfully, the Special One can aspire to adding prizes far, far more glittering than this one. For the moment, I'd guess, the Supercopa will be sufficient reward.

Plans ready for 100MW thermal power by 2014

Thursday, 17 May 2012 00:00
The Citizen Reporters
Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s energy sector is heading for good tidings, going by the announcement issued yesterday to the effect that the country will start producing geothermal power in the near future.

Geothermal power refers to electricity that is produced by harnessing internal heat of the earth. Further prospects of more electricity came from the launch of the board of director for a joint venture company, which seeks to produce power from coal as at the Mchuchuma and Liganga fields.

While the geothermal project targets at producing 100MW within the next two years, a foreign company, Tanzania China International Mineral Resources Limited (TCIMR), plans to produce 300MW by the year 2014. Both projects would be implemented in Mbeya Region. While TCIMR is a joint venture between National Development Corporation (NDC) and a Chinese company, Sichuan Hongda, the geothermal project would be carried out by Geothermal Power (Tanzania), a local company.

Information released in Dar es Salaam yesterday said that TCIMR plans to start exploration work after six months. While China Development Bank has provided a $2.4 billion loan for the project, the company itself has made available $600 million, making it the single largest investment venture in East Africa.Geothermal Power (Tanzania) Limited chairman Graeme Robertson told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the company has initially invested $5 million (about Sh8 billion) for the project.

What is Smart Garage?

The Smart Garage is a new energy paradigm focused on the integration of how we use energy. It is made possible by the convergence of energy in the transportation, electricity grid and building sector enabled by plug-in vehicles. It combines key industry endeavors such as smart charging, Vehicle to Grid, V2Building, and the smart grid.

What are the advantages of the Smart Garage?

The vehicle sector is clearly moving towards wholly or partially electric vehicles. Utilities are looking for ways to manage existing volatility, smooth load profiles and increase renewables. Smart Garage offers a way to reap the financial benefits from both industry trends.

Smart Garage bridges the transportation, building and electric power sectors by providing electricity as a low-carbon fuel to vehicles and then using vehicle energy storage for responsive services to the power grid. This optimizes the efficiency of both sectors and enables significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

The challenges of creating the Smart Garage

Smart Garage will require deep collaboration between multiple industries to succeed, but so far that collaboration has not happened, and instead, disjointed research and development endeavors continue with little coordination. The lack of a collective vision for the value chain, technical communication, and electronic/data flows associated with Smart Garage has created a bottleneck.
Collaborative and open design can overcome the barriers presented by the complexity of Smart Garage systems. First, with Smart Garage, collaboration and agreement on key principles, earlier stages, and open standards will enable rapid growth without being slowed by incompatible, proprietary hardware and software. Second, developing a clear vision and understanding for the entire system will enable players to recognize impacts and synergies across disciplines.

Plug- In - Electric Vehicle

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV), or plug-in hybrid is a hybrid vehicle which utilizes rechargeable batteries, or another energy storage device, that can be restored to full charge by connecting a plug to an external electric power source (usually a normal electric wall socket). A PHEV shares the characteristics of both a conventional hybrid electric vehicle, having an electric motor and an internal combustion engine (ICE); and of an all-electric vehicle, having a plug to connect to the electrical grid. Most PHEVs on the road today are passenger cars, but there are also PHEV versions of commercial vehicles and vans, utility trucks, buses, trains, motorcycles, scooters, and military vehicles.
The cost for electricity to power plug-in hybrids for all-electric operation has been estimated at less than one quarter of the cost of gasoline in California.[1] Compared to conventional vehicles, PHEVs reduce air pollution locally and dependence on petroleum. PHEVs may reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming,[2][3] compared with conventional vehicles. PHEVs also eliminate the problem of range anxiety associated to all-electric vehicles, because the combustion engine works as a backup when the batteries are depleted, giving PHEVs driving range comparable to other vehicles with gasoline tanks.[4][5][6] Plug-in hybrids use no fossil fuel during their all-electric range and produce lower greenhouse gas emissions if their batteries are charged from renewable electricity. Other benefits include improved national energy security, fewer fill-ups at the filling station, the convenience of home recharging, opportunities to provide emergency backup power in the home, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications.[7][8]
Chinese battery manufacturer and automaker BYD Auto released the F3DM to the Chinese fleet market in December 2008[9][10][11] and began sales to the general public in Shenzhen in March 2010.[12][13] General Motors began deliveries of the Chevrolet Volt in the U.S. in December 2010.[14] Deliveries to retail customers of the Fisker Karma began in the U.S. in November 2011.[15] Other plug-in vehicles ongoing demonstration trials or slated to the market for 2012 and 2013 are the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Ford C-Max Energi, Volvo V70 Plug-in Hybrid, Ford Fusion Energi, Suzuki Swift Plug-in, Audi A1 e-tron, BMW i8, and Fisker Surf. The Volt is the world's top selling plug-in hybrid, with cumulative sales of 8,272 units in the U.S. and Canada through December 2011.[16][17] As of October 2011, BYD Auto reported cumulative sales of over 1,000 F3DMs in China since 2008.[18]
Until 2010 most PHEVs on the road in the US are conversions of conventional hybrid electric vehicles,[5] and the most prominent PHEVs are conversions of 2004 or later Toyota Prius, which have had plug-in charging and more batteries added and their electric-only range extended.[19] Several countries, including the United States and several European countries, have enacted laws to facilitate the introduction of PHEVs through grants and tax credits, emissions mandates, and by financing research and development of advanced batteries and other related technologies. Boost Your Immune System

Your body’s immune system is resilient and strong, and typically does well with defending itself from viruses, bacteria and other micro-organisms that can cause diseases. Sometimes, though, it becomes weak, and a virus enters, compromising your immune system. When this happens, what can you do to enhance your immune system? While there are no proven studies that bridge the gap between having a healthy lifestyle and a strong immune system, general healthy-living and foods rich in pre- and probiotics and antioxidants are a great way to boost your immune system.
Healthy living is a good line of defense for your body. Your body, including your immune system, functions better when you follow healthy living options such as exercising regularly; eating foods high in fibre, vegetables, and fruit; avoiding smoking or excessive drinking; sleeping about seven to eight hours each day; and getting health checkups regularly.
Choosing immune boosting foods with pre- and probiotics and antioxidants is said to also be a great defense for your body. Probiotics are beneficial “microorganisms introduced into the body for their beneficial qualities,” while prebiotics are “non-digestible food ingredients that promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the intestines.” Prebiotics are generally thought to feed probiotics, which in turn may positively impact your health and immune system.
Prebiotics come from carbohydrate fibers called oligosaccharides. Once you eat them, oligosaccharides are thought to travel through your digestive system, helping good bacteria grow and flourish along the way. Some foods containing oligosaccharides include fruits, legumes and whole grains.
Probiotic bacteria like lactobacilli, in turn, may help to prevent growth of bad bacteria, viruses and yeast in the digestive system, and other areas of the body, by fighting them. They are naturally found in fermented foods like yogurt and sauerkraut.
Antioxidants are “molecules that are capable of inhibiting the oxidation of other molecules,” that is, “vitamins and minerals that help to eliminate free radicals, toxic byproducts that are produced when fuel is burned by the body.” They are essential for proper functioning of the immune system and are said to help protect the body. Antioxidants are naturally found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grain cereals, red wine, tea and herbs. Specific foods include pecans, blackberry, grapes, cranberry, grapefruit, apple, blueberry, beans (red, pinto, kidney), garlic, carrot, tomato, teas (green, black, herbal), ginger, garlic, spices and red wine.

Yes, politics can't be ignored!

Chelsea 3 - 2 Barca on Agreggate!!

Chelsea produced one of the greatest escapes in the history of European football tonight as they survived the sending off of John Terry to win an astonishing Champions League semi-final with Barcelona.
Chelsea looked dead and buried but, as at Stamford Bridge, they struck a dagger blow with their first shot on target in first-half stoppage-time.
Frank Lampard was again the creator as Ramires burst through and floated a glorious finish over Valdes - moments after picking up a booking that would rule him out of the final.
The cascade of noise that had filled the Nou Camp turned to silence at half-time but they were soon cheering again after the restart when Drogba conceded a penalty.
Cakir adjudged the striker had tripped Fabregas and pointed to the spot, with Ivanovic cautioned for his protest.
It looked certain Messi would end his Chelsea hoodoo but, incredibly, he smashed his effort against the crossbar.
Lampard was fortunate to escape punishment for a flare-up with Fabregas, Sanchez nodded substitute Daniel Alves' cross wide, and Cech was booked for timewasting having already been warned before saving well again from Cuenca.
Ivanovic almost capitalised after Drogba helped Chelsea win a rare corner but he was warned himself after going down theatrically, while Lampard was lucky to only see yellow for cutting down Fabregas after Messi was booked for tugging him back.
The visitors were hanging on and were given two lifelines in 60 seconds in the final 10 minutes when Sanchez had a goal ruled out for offside and Messi hit the post from 20 yards.
With time running out, Meireles was ruled out of the final after being booked for fouling Mascherano, who Cech saved from again in the final minute.
And then, in stoppage-time, a long clearance found substitute Torres with 50 yards of space in which to run.
Unlike most of his Chelsea career, he made no mistake, rounding Valdes and slotting home to jubilant scenes.

How they do!!

As long as they can do, we can also do it! Yes, we can. We just need people who can dedicate their lives and time in doing what is suppose to be done for the future of our country. There is no roon for "a may be", its about doing it by taking more resources, more time and being patients with the outputs before getting to the final destination.

THE “POWER” OF ELECTRICITY

For a community to raise itself out of subsistence and into an upward spiral of increased prosperity, certain basic services must be available and affordable. These include drinkable water, health care, education, transportation and communication.

Access to reliable electricity is a precondition for the provision of many of these services and an active catalyst for sustainable development.

The provision of electricity has a significant social impact. The improvement of communication and social activities, as well as health and educational services and facilities, clearly boost living standards and, consequently, prevent urban migration, provide a stronger sense of community, reduce mortality and improve gender quality.

Electricity access has also a substantial impact in terms of economic development by increasing productivity and economic growth, as well as local employment. The possibility of preserving specific products, having irrigation facilities and powered processing equipment, will increase the production capacity as well as the quantity and quality of the product placed in the market.

Saini za wabunge zazidi kumiminika!!

Zitto Zuberi Kabwe@zittokabwe

Why do Tanzanians students fail Mathematics?

Knowledge in mathematics is a key to any field.
  1. Lack of qualified mathematics teachers in our country has contributed to students failing the subject in the country, mathematics professors have said.
Speaking to journalists in Yola recently, a lecturer at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Prof. Bayo Lawal said most teachers who teach mathematics in schools are not well trained in the field thereby hindering the capability of students in the subject.
Prof. Lawal said that the government should ensure that only trained teachers in mathematics are employed to teach the subjects in schools, stressing that the teachers also need proper motivation to carry out their responsibilities.
2. Another don in mathematics at the university, Prof. Adeleke Adegboye said lecturers instill fear in the students and discourage them from interest in the subject.

Do you have any other main causes for our students failing mathematics? I believe not only mathematics in which our students fail, but to start with, I selected mathematics.
